Astola Island, Pakistan's largest offshore island, offers one of the country's most remote and rewarding coastal experiences, a real wilderness expedition rather than a standard beach day.
What makes it significant: Designated Pakistan's first Marine Protected Area in 2017, Astola supports significant sea turtle nesting grounds and coral reef biodiversity, alongside a documented history stretching back to antiquity, the island is even mentioned in ancient accounts from Alexander the Great's era.
Getting there: A genuine journey, roughly 7 hours by road from Karachi to the fishing port of Pasni, followed by a 3 to 4 hour boat crossing to the island itself.
What to expect once there: Completely uninhabited except for seasonal fishing activity, no facilities of any kind exist, meaning all food, water and camping equipment must be brought with you.
Activities: Snorkeling and diving among coral reefs, sea turtle nesting observation in season, wilderness camping under dark skies, and a hike to the island's high point for sunrise views.
Practical access note: Current regulations have made independent diving access to Astola difficult, arranging any diving specifically through an established operator well in advance is essential rather than optional.
Best time to visit: September through May, avoiding the June August fishing off season when rough seas complicate the boat crossing.
